God has given us so many little blessings since our disappointing news that Alex’s surgery would once again need to be delayed. One of those blessings was the surprise of beautiful snow falling and the ground covered when we woke on Monday morning. As many of you know, when there is snow on the ground in Middle TN and you are a family who LOVES the snow you do whatever you can to clear the day and just play outside, warm by the fire, drink hot cocoa, make snow cream, and repeat!!! I know, I know, those of you from areas of the country that get real big snows are chuckling when you see our “big snow” but this was big for us!! We got excited when we could see white stuff Christmas morning but this was enough for snowmen, sliding, and snowball fights and it was the perfect kind of sticky!

Sadly, Daddy couldn’t join us for our day of play but another family in the neighborhood was experiencing their children’s first big snow so we all enjoyed it together. The only mornings I enjoy being awakened are ones that start with the words, IT’S SNOWING!!! Such a fun way to start the day. Of course I always have this picture in my head of how the day is going to go and it always includes me sitting by the fire crocheting or reading, listening to music and the happy sounds of children’s laughter, as I watch snowflakes fall to the ground! Now I will give you the pictures to prove how it really went! It was even better than I had pictured but one day I am going to have that kind of a snow day and I expect I will watch the snowflakes and remember all of the exhausting fun we had.

The kids made five snowmen during the day and rolled many large snowballs. They built barriers out of all kinds of things to use as shields in their snowball battles. I don’t have pictures of all of them but here are two. Kyle’s cube man had a friend who was flat man but his head kept falling off so he is just hanging out on the ground! These kids are pretty creative!

Sliding, sliding, sliding!! There were races of all kinds. The hill may not be very big but it kept this crew, including the mamas, entertained and warm for hours. Who knew Kindergarten mats made awesome sleds. I sure didn’t. Have I said how creative and fun these kids are? 😄😂 They probably tried ten different options of items to slide with before settling on these. Perseverance paid off!

Here are links to a couple short sliding and snow play fun videos if you want to watch them! https://rumble.com/vcqj3p-alex-sliding.html

Boone helped make the hot cocoa during one of his warm ups. He and I read a couple of books together by the fire and a little while later, once the snow bowl was filled, we all made snow cream together. It really was an incredible family day!

Last week Alex had appointments with two of her Vanderbilt doctors, which included blood work. Once again she was a trooper. She is getting so good at advocating for herself and letting them know what she prefers in different situations. I am loving watching this little one grow up And her personality growing always stronger. Overall it was a good day. Lab results all came back with nothing to complain about and we are always thankful for that. It seems there is always some difficult conversation on doctor days but nothing too hard this time. With her rehab doctor we discussed in more detail her post surgery therapy options and have a more clear direction. He is such an amazing doctor and we are always overwhelmed by his care for Alex. We will continue to work with him after we get back to TN following surgery and the initial six or so weeks of recovery and he will help us get everything set up to continue her care here and get her back on her feet. We are moving in the right direction.

Ethan willingly held down the fort at home this evening while Brent and I got a date night. It was a sweet gift to us. We confirmed our travel plans and made a list of the things that we need to get done before we leave again. Each time we have had surgery planned the list has changed mostly because the seasons keep changing. When we thought we were having surgery the end of last summer we worked to finish up garden harvests, finish up the home renovations we had been working on all year, and make sure the kids school schedules were written and supplies gathered and ready to go. When it changed to December we made Christmas plans, did Christmas activities early at home, shopped, wrapped and packed gifts and artificial Christmas trees for Christmas in Texas and planning to be away from Paul on his birthday. Now that surgery is February we once again turn our attention to spending a little bit of time in the yard even though it is much earlier than we usually would to make sure things are ready and not too out of control when we get back in town in late March. Also focusing on the annual household purge we always try to do following Christmas and having things together for Boone’s 4th birthday in March. We had to laugh as we made this new list and talked over the other similar lists we have made over the last year. We are thankful that we know God is still not confused or mistaken and that he has seen fit to allow us to see glimpses of the positives in the delays now that we are looking back and remembering. As we have said over and over again, we wouldn’t have asked for this but we are thankful for how this challenging season has been used in the life of our family, our marriage, and each of us individually. My prayer for all who are struggling is that they will be able to see Christ’s love shining through the heartache and feel His loving embrace. As always, we thank you all for the many ways you love and support us along the way. I hope you enjoyed this glimpse of our crazy, wonderful life!
